Croatian terms for concepts of EU law

Project headed by Prof. Dr. Susan Šarčević and Prof. Dr. Milica Gačić

Institution: Law Faculty of the University of Rijeka/Croatia

Project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (CSF)

Part of the project: Croatian specialized terminology (STRUNA),
Institute of Croatian Language and
Linguistics

The goal of this one-year project is to establish a scientific basis for the formation and systematization of Croatian terms for concepts of EU law, thus laying a foundation for their unification and standardization, which is a precondition for the reliability of the translations of the EU acquis, and upon accession, for the proper functioning of the rule of law within the framework of the EU. Modern methods of corpus terminography will be used to determine and analyze basic EU legal terms and designations of EU institutions, based on multilingual corpora of selected EU documents reflecting the changes brought about by the Treaty of Lisbon. Problematic Croatian terms will be resolved and definitions proposed by the interdisciplinary team of linguists and lawyers in the project. All Croatian terms and definitions will be entered into the STRUNA database, together with the corresponding English, French and German terms.
