Review article

The Article denotes the Author's purpose to find out when the Croatian Kings took power over the territory of former Byzantine Thema Dalmatia. The issue has been analysed and discussed by numerous researchers and the prevailing opinion appoints 1069 as the year of the event. The crucial argument(s) was/were several figures from the deed of donation ref. the island of Maun from the very same year. Nevertheless, there are previously dated informations that particular areas of the Byzantine Dalmatia acknowledged the authority of Croatian ruler (e.g. Krk or Zadar). On the other side it is quite obvious that some of the towns recognized the Byzantine supreme authorities afterwards, towards the end of the 11th century.  Accordingly, the conclusive remarks indicate the decline of the Byzantine power as the long- lasting process and not as the question of the instant event. The Byzantine power in Dalmatian territory gradually declined during the 11th century. The process might be interrupted on local/regional level (when/where Byzantine power became restored) but the final consequences of the process remained unquestionable.

Key words: Byzantine Empire, Croatia, 11 th century.
